How To: The Braided Scarf

The scarf is possibly the most versatile wardrobe item you can own. Think of it as a blank canvas that you can work a lot of fashion magic on. There are a million and one ways to wear a scarf but my absolute favourite way to do it is to braid it. It is incredibly easy and the result is always fun and stylish!

Braiding a scarf into your hair may be an oldie, but it is definitely a goodie. [Remember this Hermes SS10 ad featuring Karlie Koss with a twilly braided through her hair?] Not only is it pretty in a Bohemian flower-child kind of way, it is also great for keeping your hair in place. The beauty about it is that it will work equally well whether you are doing spring-cleaning or going to a summer music festival.

Another small on effort but big on style tip is to wear your braided scarf as a collar necklace. The simplest way to do this is to take three silk scarves (you can mix and match the prints and colours however you like), braid them and tie it around your neck. You can also braid gold chains or strings of pearls into the scarves to create an interesting tactile effect!

Etsy is a great resource for gorgeous, hand-crafted braided scarves or necklaces, such as this multi-coloured yarn rope scarf. However, if you are up for some crafty fun and have some old T-shirts lying around, why not try your hands at making a braided T-shirt scarf? It is only a matter of cutting out strips of jersey fabric, braiding them together and voila! you have yourself a quirky new scarf.

So, if you are looking to add a little spunk into your outfits, a braided scarf may just be the answer!
